For about a year I have been receiving spam emails like this one below. They all look like they’ve been sent by private individuals somewhere in the world (usually from Yahoo or Hotmail accounts) but advertise companies in China:

What appears to have happened is that spammers know the passwords to these mail accounts and are using them to send that spam to everyone in the mail account’s address book.
This is a very effective way to get through spam filters, as many recipients are likely to also have the sender in their address book and address book entries are automatically whitelisted by many spamfilters.
If you receive an email like that, alert the “sender” that their account has been compromised. They need to immediately change their email password to something more secure.
This abuse of stolen passwords illustrates the potential of password harvesting scams such as this one I documented in August 2008, which is still going on.

Good passwords and bad passwords
A strong password should be the first line of defense against such criminals, but what makes a password good? It should contain a mixture of all of the following:
- lower case letters
- upper case letters
- digits
- at least one non-alphanumeric character
This makes it hard to break the password through brute force or through dictionary attacks.
Also the password should not be too short (8 characters or more) and should be reasonably easy to memorize, so you don’t have much need to write it down. Some examples:
- 45Knife%Cabbage
- 4F5g6H&j
- J0hn1945-07-31
Bad choices are passwords that consist of any word found in a dictionary, proper names, digits-only dates, adjacent keys on the keyboard or repeated characters. Never use anything like these:
- secret
- qwerty
- xxxx
- john45
It is very important not to use the exact same password for different purposes.
If spammers manage to trick you into revealing your password for one site (e.g. by getting you to create a new account at a site they control or by breaking into the database of another site where you’re a customer) then you’ve effectively handed them the key to the candy store. They can get access to your email account, in which they may find login information, password reminders, etc. of many other sites you’ve signed up for. At the very least they can harvest all your email contacts.
Beyond using different passwords for every site and service, it’s also a good idea to use a different password schema for “core” sites that you trust and depend upon (such as your email provider and webhost) and another for sites to which you sign up more casually (such as various forums, online shopping, etc.). Thus if one of the latter is compromised, it does not give criminals any clues what your more critical passwords may look like.
Who is behind this spam?
The sites advertised from the hacked email accounts constantly vary. They usually have been created only a few weeks or months earlier. For example, the domain in the above example was created two months ago:

Considering the highly illegal way the companies advertised, what are the chances that any order you make at those sites would ever get shipped to you? For sure, they will gladly take your cash by (untraceable, unsafe) Western Union or take your credit card number, expiration date and security code. Never use Western Union to send money to people you don’t know from real life in person. Never enter your credit card on a site that doesn’t have SSL access (indicated by a URL starting with https:// and a padlock icon in the browser status bar) with a proper certificate.
Even more basic: Never do business with spammers. By sending you spam, they have already proven to you that they lack any morals. You have no reason to trust them and every reason to be alert!

buangels.com is hosted at 208.43.148.102, same place as ele-eden, which in turn is mentioned on easevshop.com, which are all part of this same scam series.
xinkeke.com is hosted at 204.16.194.115, but it shares name servers ns1.4everdns.com and ns2.4everdns.com with buangels.com, ele-eden, easevshop.com and numerous others mentioned in this blog posting and the comments.
All these scam domains appear connected.
An article on the BBC website speculates the passwords to the Hotmail accounts may have been obtained via key logging:

I am not convinced, because of the spam is sent almost exclusively via Hotmail accounts, but key logging would also yield a lot more other accounts, such as Yahoo or Gmail which I’m not seeing.
My hotmail account is sending out this message to all of my contacts. I have tried changing password, but it has still sent another very similar message. Virus checker does not find anything. Don’t have an email signature set-up, nor an auto reply. Does anybody have a clue how to get rid of it?

The have somehow acquired the password to your account. Either it was something weak, such as “1234”, “password” or the left portion of your Hotmail address, or they managed to get a password logger onto your machine. For the former it should be enough to change the password to something more secure. You should also check if additional secondary mail addresses have been added to your account, or the criminals could get back in again.
If the problem is a key logger on your machine then you’ll have to run a malware scanner or even wipe the hard disk and reinstall Windows.
I believe in most cases the problem is a weak password.

I inquired on their website and got all the answers quite soon. I even asked one question in Finnish to check how serious they are. It seemed they had translated my question quite right and said they are not joking but doing serious business wanting new contacts. I thought I’ll give it a try and ordered a digital camera – knowing that I might loose my money. However I did some research in the internet not finding anything serious against saleele.com. I didn’t find this website at that time.
I paid my order by Western Union accepting the risk. First everything looked OK. They kept communicating with me after receiving the payment and confirmed the item has been shipped. They gave me an estimated time of delivery within 7 days. However on the 6th day I received the following message:
“Dear Kevin, we are sorry to tell you that your Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 12.1 Megapixel was blocked in the custom offices now .the custom officers told us should pay the customs is 185 usd. the addational tax is 87 usd.the VAT is 33usd.the total is 305usd (205euro).
you must pay this as soon as possible so that you can received your items in time.and if the time more long ,the customs office will require the keeping fee. best wishes to you ! awaiting your early reply!”
Of course I now understood not to pay more money to them as it seems to be a fraud – just steeling my money. And by the way, my name is not Kevin!

Then I pretended to be someone else and approached “Lili” with different email address. I was asking if these “rumors” about the customs tax were true. She said there have never been any customs tax or other hidden cost ever and the rumors as such would be a lie. Then I just knew they would be liers completely because what they told me was opposite to what happened to me with them.
From another email address I also pretended to order 4 laptops or so with them and pushed them a bit asking for discount etc. and giving them false Western Union numbers “by mistake”. They were happy to give me big discounts just to rip any money off me! Of course I never paid more 😉
Please do not send any money to Saleele, or these other websites including same text or layout! They don’t have anything for you! However you may want to push them a bit as well…

I’ve added “Friendly-Trade.com” to the spam blacklist. There’s also a warning against them on McAfee (www.siteadvisor.com/sites/friendly-trade.com/postid?p=2503734)
So these examples are a scam originating in China where the victim pays by Western Union or MoneyGram and if they go ahead get tapped for even more money on some pretext involving customs. And the websites and emails of course vanish after a few weeks.
And it’s only effective because the recommendations apparently come from contacts who’ve had their Hotmail account details compromised.
Just these last few weeks I’ve also seen real Hotmail accounts abused to send links to web pages that redirect to an “online pharmacy”. The X-Originating-IP address in the header this time is not usually in Asia, but in any location, possibly a botnet. Presumably the list of compromised details is now circulating more widely, and I given the proportion of contacts using Hotmail I’ve had this from, I think far more than 10,000 accounts have been affected. And most of those run up-to-date virus scanners and some are quite security-conscious.

I would recommend that anyone with a Hotmail account changes their password on a regular basis.

I received a somewhat scam thing. It says I won a million dollar (2.7m$ USD to be exact) and it did get my attention. But I didn’t reply and placed it in spam. Can you guys cite some of this scam? Can this be remedied? I know this isn’t true and am not taking my chances on it though temptingly awesome but I am very afraid of the time when you transact the sender would scam you. It was sent from africa claiming to be the late president in Buna so she said.

This is alarming. A spam is an annoying factor which people find very agitated to remove on their lives ( mostly on blogs). But there are also some scams on this one. A spam message sent and when you comply you got to see their message and sometimes got hooked on their message. I can relate with Mark here of stretch mark removal, when he got sent a message claiming he won USD money. I know that is a scam and not to be answered. It is not legitimate. Beware of it. There is no such thing as that these days.

The following scam was posted by “Aly kabba” (sglotele@gmail.com). Note that one phone number is a South African mobile phone while the other number is a free voice mail box to email gateway in Seattle, WA, USA. There is no “Federal Bureau of Telecommunication” in South Africa. A search for “Federal Bureau of Telecommunication” provides many examples of fake electronics supplier offers.
