Mobile phone scams from Nigeria and Europe (payment by Western Union)

Fake electronics stores and how to detect them
You will find many businesses on the Internet (especially on B2B sites such as Alibaba.com) that offer mobile phones, notebook computers and other electronic products are very low prices. You should be aware that many of them are fraudulent.

These companies are not actual registered businesses. They have no offices, no warehouses, no accounts, just a bunch of guys with cellphones. All names and postal addresses are fake. The whole purpose of the fake companies is to trick people into sending cash or providing credit card details without ever shipping any products to the customers.

The criminals are taking advantage of the fact that there is a serious lack of law enforcement resources targetted at small scale online fraud. If you have lost less than $5,000-10,000 the police would rather not even open a file on your case. Don't expect serious action unless the damage is much higher. This comes as a shock to many victims, but it's the current reality.

Many of the "businesses" listed below are based in Nigeria, but others are based in Europe or elsewhere. These fake stores are primarily run by gangs from Nigeria, Romania and Russia. In some cases the only indication of where the criminals are is the country where the bank account is based, which may be different from the address claimed for the company. Here are some simple rules to follow if you don't want to get burnt:

Never pay for online purchases by Western Union wire transfer (no exceptions)! It doesn't matter where the store claims to be based: Once you send money it can be picked up anywhere in the recipient's country, with no way of tracing the person who picked it up. The criminal remains anonymous. Do not trust any schemes to later change the recipient's name or the question/answer pair. Assume that if the criminal knows your name and the amount you sent he can pick up the money, no questions asked. That's why Western Union has become the leading payment vehicle for online scams. Western Union is fine to wire cash to a stranded family member in a hurry, but do not use it for internet shopping, ever!
Beware if the seller uses a free webmail account (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc) or if the company's main phone number is a mobile phone (Spain: +34-6xx, UK: +44-70xx, +44-87xx, Nigeria: +234 80x) or if it shares the same number for the phone and fax or it doesn't list a postal address.
Beware if a seller doesn't have his own website or uses a free webhosting site (e.h. http://phonestore.8m.com).
Beware if the business has its own site, but the domain was created less than three months ago (use the following link to check their domain registration).

Search for the name of the company on Google. Search for the phone number too, some of the frauds get reincarnated with a new company name but still using the same mobile phone. If the search yields scam warnings or only classified ads by the company and its own website or if you don't find anything at all you should be very careful. Use the form below to search:
Beware of prices that are too low and/or free shipping and/or worldwide on-site service. Legitimate businesses need to pay suppliers, rent, taxes etc. and still make a profit. They won't underprice the nearest competitor by 30% or 50%, if they can also get the sale by being only 5-10% cheaper. In the real world international shipping is expensive and so is on-site service. You only get what you pay for. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Never pay by bank wire transfer into a bank account in a name other than the name of the business or in a country other than where the store claims to be based (e.g. UK company, Spanish account or German company, Dutch account). Why would a legitimate business use an account held in the name of an individual or not have an account in the same country?
If you pay by credit card you're generally protected, but if the business is a scam they can abuse your credit card details for making fraudulent purchases elsewhere. PayPal is the safest.
Don't buy mobile phones and other electronic equipment from a supplier in Nigeria unless you actually live there. Nigeria does not manufacture high-tech electronic equipment. All such goods have to be imported first and its ports and airports are notoriously inefficient. There is no reason why anyone there should be able to export mobile phones, computers and other imported high tech, high value articles cheaply. When you receive offers for such equipment at prices that sound too good to be true, assume it to be a scam.

How to fight back
If you have been defrauded, report the email addresses used in the scam to the webmail providers and ask for the accounts to be suspended (see here). This interrupts all scams in progress and forces the criminals to start from scratch using new email accounts, making all their ads on the web obsolete.

If you have had any questionable offers to buy mobile phones, laptop computers or similar items in Nigeria or Europe, please forward copies of emails to 419@419scam.org so we can warn others! Please use one of the following subject lines for your message:

When you see such offers, use a disposable yahoo.com address to contact the company and get a quote for any phone or ask for a price list. You can also ask for payment instructions (bank accounts, wire transfer instructions). After you receive a response, click on the arrow on the right hand side of the Forward button in Yahoo! Mail and select "as attachment" to forward the reply to us. Use the above subject lines. When we receive those forwarded mails we can see where the mails are really sent from. It allows us to tie different scams and email addresses to the same originators.

"BB MOBILEZ LTD" in Nigeria is a scam

One of these offers came from a company called "BB MOBILEZ LTD" and an individual called "LEHMAN OVIE KING". Here is the message and what we could find out about the company:

Notes about this email and the company behind it.

The email address is a free webmail account. Why would someone from an English speaking country such as Nigeria use a french version of Yahoo? All the menus will be in French, but this guys doesn't sound French...

The website is a free site, or was a free website, I should say, because it no longer exists:

  Possible Reasons:

You may have spelled the URL incorrectly.
This site may have been removed due to a violation of the BizHosting
"Acceptable Use Policy".
This site may have been moved to a different server.

When you can buy a domain for a year for $19.95 this does not look like a real business.

The main phone is a mobile phone, which is not really unusual for third world countries, where fixed lines have long waiting lists, but it does make them more difficult to trace.
I googled for that mobile phone number. These guys have been around, sending out spam like this one:

Notice how their free email addresses have changed since then. I wonder if they got shut down when someone complained. The postal address changed too.

I have not found any references for this company, other than free business directories or business solicitation spam, in other words, no third party that recommends doing business with them.

What I have received is the following report of a fraud:

I write this e-mail to you cause unfortunately I know bb mobilez 
from Nigeria.
3 days ago I read a message post from this "company" that selling 
some cell phones at cheap prices.
I sent an e-mail asking for a pricelist and they contacted me with 
Yahoo messenger with an address  bb_mobilez@yahoo.fr .
So...I asked for 10 cell phones and they told me that thay normally 
sell 20 units block ,but just for my first time could sell me 10 phones.
So the total amount was 1240euros....I paid with Western Union and 
the next day they tell me that they can't ship me the phones and 
I must buy another 10 phones to receive all.
I asked my money back, but they don't want to re send me back.....
So I'm still trying to have my money...but I think it is difficult.
This is my story,I hope you can give me a little help,

to our company Chairman for the shipment approval, but our chairman 
has totally disagree not to sign the shipment of the package, due 
to the quantity of phones you ordered for is far below our company 
minimum order required. 

My Chairman felt really bad about your order quantity and an 
increament needs to be made as soon as possible, so that the 
shipment of your package can take place today before this week 
runs out. Our Boss (Chairman) just arrived from London-Europe 
early this morning. The solution left is for you to make the 
neccessary order increament today, so that the package can be 
shipped out today before this week runs out. 

I am very sorry for the inconvenient, you have to bear with us. 
I surely guarantee you that your order package will shiped out 
today immediately the order is up to our company standard. 
According to our Chairman your order need to be increased from 
10pcs to a minimum of 20pcs or 22pcs. This is the only options 
left to solve the deal, so you need to make the increament as 
soon as possible, so that we can instruct our junior workers to 
add the new order to the package.

A free nokia 6230 phone will be added to your order as compesation. 
Make the neccessary arrangement of your order now. Your order 
will be shiped out as soon as the total order is packaged. Do 
you want to order for the same model of phones you requested for? 
Or do you want to add other model of phones to the package?

Hello Firstname

I'm sorry to hear the warning came too late for you.

Western Union is not safe to use with anyone you only know via the internet.
The reason is that you have no way of tracing where the person who receives
the money actually lives, because he or she will come to an office after you
email the transaction code, picks up the cash and leaves again. All you have
to try and find this guy is a free webmail address, which really is nothing.
That's why Western Union is so popular for payments with online scammers.
Any business deal that involves both a free webmail account and Western
Union is almost certainly a scam.

This guy is trying to find if he can cheat you out of 2480 euro instead of
just 1240 euro. But you have no reason to trust this fake company with
another 1240 euro when they were already dishonest on the first 1240 euro.

I doubt there are *any* legitimate companies exporting mobile phones from
Nigeria to Europe or North America. Nigeria doesn't make them and shipping
would be expensive. Mobile phones are built in Europe, North America, Japan,
China and Latin America - just about anywhere on this planet but Africa!

You don't know where this "company" is based. Any postal address they have
given could be totally fake, because it's not required for a Western Union
transfer and they already changed their address once. The guy's name is
probably fake.

You could report this to the police in victimscountry, but I doubt they would
seriously investigate, considering it's an international fraud case and the
amount is not in the tens or hundreds of thousands of euro.

Can you forward me all the emails he sent to you? Please use the "as
attachment" option of "Forward" in Yahoo! Mail. This helps me find which ISP
the scammer uses. You can also report the crime to abuse@yahoo.fr and let
them know the email account is used for criminal purposes, so they can
suspend it.

Here is a report from a not very satisfied customer of theirs:

I had an encounter with Mr.Franca Brown and Mobilephonesinc. I paid 1636usd and still haven't recieve anything. Now he is telling me about paying $170 us for insurance immunity or shipping immunity,something so. Basically,what he is saying is that it is for the package to past through customs quickly. Have you ever heard of something like this? I'm still in contact with him because i wanted to contact you first and tell you the story before i break contact with him. I'm hoping you give me some advise.

Its been 3 months now since i started dealing with them,first thewy sad it was ok to buy 3 phones(this was the sample order) and then after i sent the money,they told me that i had to upgrade the order to 10 because that was the minimum amount. At this point, i was dealing with Mr. Fidelis Smith. A mrs. Maria Steven then sent an email saying she was the General Manager and that I had to upgrade the orders. After i complained abut this Mrssteven said Mr Fidelis Simith was fired because he was not suppose to make a deal for the 3 orders.

From that point on i started dealing with Mrs. Maria Steven.When I had one more installment of 400 to pay to complete the order Mrs. steven wrote me regularly,telling me to pay it and showing me an invoice . After i sent it i didnt get any response from mrs. steven. After 4 days of no response i checked out the website and its their i saw Franca Brown. So i contacted him and he told me that Mrs. Steven is on maternity leave and that on the record shows that i paid the 1636 usd for ten motorola v3 razr phones.

However,he is now telling me(and this wasn't mentioned by either mr. fidelis smith neither mrs. maria steven) that if i want the order now i have to pay the 170usd that i mentioned in the first paragraph. Otherwise i have to wait on mrs. steven to return.

On a Dutch language message board we found a report about another phone scam involving the same postal address, in the name of "Fola David" (phonesellers9@yahoo.com) who was requesting Western Union payments to the following recipient.

The buyer had orderd Apple iPods, but was then told to pay another US$250 for custom fees is the recipient country. He was told that without that money the merchandise could not be shipped, which is nonsense: Customs duties are always paid by the recipient, not the sender.

Often in Nigerian scams, the scammers try to get the victim to throw good money after bad money, testing just how many times they can get the victim to send even more money after the initial payment. Unscrupulous criminals will milk a gullible person for as much money as they can.

This appears to be the same scam as "PHONE HOUSE STORES INCORPORATED" because their website refers to images on the previous (now defunct) website. They offered Motorola Razor V3 phones, first for $220 each, then for $150 each, which is a similar price to other scam sites. They want payment sent via Western Union, in advance (you'd be better off giving the money to charity than doing any business involving this mode of payment, especially to Nigeria).

This scam looks like it may be related to "BB MOBILEZ" as it's sent from an IP address very close to these other scam emails. One major difference is that ALPINE STORES LTD(UK) claims to be UK-based, while in reality the email is also sent from Nigeria. The UK phone numbers are special service numbers (+44 70xx) which can forward incoming calls to any number.

This company offers cheap mobile phones, has its own website and advertises on various other sites. It claims offices in Lagos, London and the Netherlands. Before doing business with them, consider the following facts:

Even though the company claims to have been in business since 1999, the domain of the website (etelecomplanet.com) was only registered on 2005-03-07. The address listed in the registration is Texas, not the UK.
The postal address listed for the office in the Netherlands actually belongs to LGSA Marine, a well established marine surveying company who have never heard of TELECOM PLANET.
Companieshouse.gov.uk has no record of any established company called TELECOM PLANET in the UK, even though the website claims the company to be one of the biggest electronic retailers in the country.
Neither the UK nor Dutch company have a name identifying them as an incorporated company (Limited or BV).
Neither the Nigerian nor the Dutch office list a fax number. The UK phone number is a special service number. The Nigerian phone number is a mobile phone.
We came across an ad for the company claiming an Ohio address. The name of the person (Naz Hayat) is the same as in the domain registration, but the address doesn't match the registration and the website doesn't mention any US office. The ad lists a US phone number: 9374552010 which is in Dayton, OH, whereas the zip code listed in the ad is in Springfield, OH.

If you have any experience with this company, let us know and forward copies of their emails to us!

This company claims to be "one of Spain's leading retailers of high performance, name brand, audio, video, computer, mobile electronics, and home theater products", yet:

Its only phone number is a mobile phone.
It doesn own a domain name, let alone a Spanish (.es) domain. It uses a free .tk URL for its website.
This supposedly Spanish company has no bilingual site. There's no Spanish to be found on their website at all.
A limited company in Spain is not called "Inc" but "S.A."
The only hit on Google is its own recent ad on Alibaba.com, the trading site.
The .tk website uses files hosted at "joeslaptopstore.com", a domain registered on 2005-01-11. There are no Google references to "joeslaptopstore.com" whatsoever. This is another cheap electronics site that looks questionable to us. The text on the main website of "joeslaptopstore.com" is largely a copy of another laptop site, "skyexlaptopstore.com" (registered 2002-01-19), which appears connected to "usanotebook.com" (registered 2001-06-25). The latter two appear to be legitimate sites selling refurbished laptops.
The phone number listed in the WHOIS record of "joeslaptopstore.com" is mentioned in a thread on Webhostingtalk.com as being a dialup modem. According to that thread the same phone number was used in trying to set up a fake website by someone accessing from Romania.

The company listed no website even though it claims to have over 100 employees. Domains are popular and cheap in Germany, with over 3 million registered .de domains. This "company" listed a free yahoo.com account as its email address (not even yahoo.de -- you'd have to be a German speaker to use that). The company name is another giveaway: Limited liability companies in Germany are either called "GmbH "(like a UK "Ltd") or "AG" (like a UK "PLC"), but not "Inc", which is American. Any online offer of a business calling itself "... store inc" suggests a Nigerian connection, based on our experience. In June we found out that "Fsc Mobile store Inc" now has registered a domain, mainly for sending email ("Fsc Mobiles Phones Stores" <sales@fscmobilestores.com>). The domain is hosted by Rediffmail in India and is registered under a fake name (Indian registrant).

I was looking to buy a number of mobile phones in order to re-sell 
them on ebay. Whilst looking for wholesale mobile phones i came across 
someone who was interested to sell me some. His answers were vague and 
he kept on trying to get me to buy phones from him, i asked if we could 
do the transaction through ebay so i had some kind of protection from 
fraudulent transactions, he refused my offer and further said that i 
should send money via a bank transfer, in the end he was even offering 
for me to pay half then the rest when i recieved the phones. I asked 
that if he was a genuine company which sell mobile phones where is his

merely a phone review site. he is operating with the

Another instance of the mobile phone number was found used for a job scam (advance fee fraud). This company is called "WIDE ASSOCIATES", just like the fake mobile phone seller ("MARK COLE" scam) and, surprize, surprize! It also shares a phone number with that scam (+234-8055308737):
