Converting a .MP3 file to a .mmf for ringtones

Problem: Mobile phones such as the Samsung 707SC distributed by Softbank Mobile in Japan support ringtones only in the .mmf file format, not the popular MP3 format.

Explanation:
The phone can play MP3-files in it's music player, but can't use it to signal incoming calls or emails. It won't let you select any .mp3 or .m4a or .aac file as a ringtone. Only files with the .mmf extension can be used.

Solution:
Yamaha, the creators of the SMAF/MA-2 standard used by .mmf files offer a free concersion tool that lets you convert WAV files to .mmf:

First use a sound editing program such as Audacity to export an MP3 file to WAV, make a clip of the desired length and adjust the amplitude for better volume control. Then drop that .wav file onto the small application window of WSC-MA2, the Yamaha conversion tool. Upload the resulting .mmf file to your mobile and select it as a ringtone.
